This time of year always seems to get me reflecting on what God has done in my life and ‘where to next’… it’s probably got to do with the Jewish New Year; either way, September has always been quite a hectic month in my life. This year, I felt the Holy Spirit lead me to fast social-media, especially Facebook as it had become a distraction and let’s face it, a complete waste of my time and focus. While I was still pondering this, Nina Brown posted about the Holy Spirit leading her to do a 40 Day Colour Fast before the Jewish New Year, revealing the significance of the two years. During the 40 Days, we reflected upon the Fruits of the Spirit (Galations 5:22-23); 5 days per fruit, with a colour attached. Nina suggested making a physical act to help remind oneself of the fast; I chose to take a photo of something in the colour of the day. This is what I have been up to for the past 40 days…
Love & Red
“This is the message you heard from the beginning; we should love one another” – 1 John 3:11
God is love.
He pursues us with Love.
His love is passionate; it moves & makes a way even when there seems to be no way; it changes lives, touches hearts & sets the prisoners free; it heals the broken, it restores relationships; it redeems the Lost; it has the power to do all things – even lay down one’s life for a lost world on a cross, bearing our sins.
Because of this love; I am able to love others.
Joy & Yellow
“Be joyful always!” – Phil 4:4
Joy is a state of mind & heart – it is a deliberate choice, regardless of circumstances. It is God’s will for us to be joyful because it ushers in gratitude and reflects His heart to a lost, hopeless world.
God’s joy is our strength.
Peace & Turquoise
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” – Phil 4:7
Peace is a gift from Jesus.
It is found when one abides in His presence and turns one’s heart and spirit towards Him.
Its from a place of peace (Rest, Contentment) that one can truly love others and reflect Jesus to a world filled with strife.
Patience & Green
“Imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” – Heb 6:12
Being patient in the natural, physical world is hard.
Patience in the spiritual is much, much harder; its endurance.
Endurance requires digging deep, into the uncomfortable parts of our being: long after Flesh has died to self and even the soul has grown weary… all that remains is spirit clinging to Spirit – trusting enough to hold on. Endurance takes serious courage.
Kindness & Blue
Kindness is rare.
Kindness is the result of the Holy Spirit living within us, He leads us to be loving with others – seeking to be kind. Kindness means placing the other above one’s self; choosing to act & speak in the way that builds them up. Its a quality greatly needed, but sadly missing in this world.
Faithfulness & Purple
“The one who calls you is faithful and He will do it” – 1 Thess 5:24
Gentleness & Pink
“Let your gentleness be evident to all” – Phil 4:5
Gentleness is “power under control”
It is most often needed in a situation filled with strife; gentleness is a soothing balm that calms and brings healing – and we need the Holy Spirit to do that! But as God is gentle in His dealings with us, so we need to follow his example with others.
Self-Control & Orange
Self-Control is only truly effective when we surrender the control of our Self to the Holy Spirit; its a moment by moment act of will to live by the Spirit and not according to our sinful nature.
